METCO Program Highlights

The METCO program provides the opportunity for children from racially imbalanced schools in Boston and Needham to learn together in an integrated public school setting. METCO increases the diversity and reduces the isolation so that students from different backgrounds can learn from each other in meaningful ways.

In FY14, Needham had 155 students in the METCO program with:
68 students in the elementary schools
49 students in the middle schools
38 students in the high school

Over the past few years, the proportion of METCO student enrollments in Needham High’s upper level courses has increased and 83% of the graduates have attended college. Students at all levels report successes, challenges, and pride in being METCO students.

In March 2014, a report by an outside team of consultants was presented to the Needham district with a comprehensive assessment of our K-12 METCO program. This report covered student progress, parent satisfaction, and alternative uses of METCO funds. The full report can be found at the link above.
