METCO Middle School

group of students

In Middle School, METCO students are part of a school community that is organized into clusters with a team of teachers in Math, Science, English and Social Studies -- plus the support from the METCO Coordinator, Ms. Smart who builds a relationship with each of the METCO students. According to a seventh grader at Pollard, “If we have any questions, we can go to her. It’s really helpful, since I’m able to see her a lot.”

For parents of Middle School students, there is an Introduction to METCO Middle School Programming hosted by the METCO Director and Middle School METCO Coordinator. For students transitioning from grades 5 to 6 and from grades 6 to 7, Ms. Smart offers assistance whenever needed.

Middle School classes aim to maximize the educational possibilities for all students, and every effort is made to balance the classes in terms of gender, academic strengths, social maturity, ethnicity, special needs, and supportive peer groups. Our METCO students also benefit from afterschool programs such as homework clubs and tutoring. At Pollard, Students Working and Growing (SWAG) is an afterschool group established to provide students, particularly students of color, with support and encouragement in both the academic and social-emotional realm. Activities include group study, guided conversations about diversity, help in understanding expectations, and multicultural resource materials.

It is our hope that all of this support will make each child’s educational experience a fruitful one. Students are expected to be responsible and accountable. METCO parents are partners with our school faculty and staff. It takes all of us, working together, to achieve our goals for every METCO student.
