METCO Needham High School

METCO students at Needham High have many opportunities for exploring their interests. With the support of the METCO Coordinator, Mr. Abdal-Khallaq, METCO students in grades 9 through 12 learn to navigate a high school with a student population of approximately 1600 and over ninety instructional staff. NHS also has 10 counselors to assist students and parents in planning an academic program, in developing post-secondary plans, and in addressing personal issues. In addition, the College Bound program is offered to students starting in the spring of their Junior year, helping students with the college research and application process from beginning to end.

There is a growing list of classes and clubs offered at Needham High that may be of particular interest to many of our METCO students. Here are a few examples:

African American Studies and Contemporary Issues - This full year course analyzes the entire African American experience from the slave trade to the present, emphasizing the dynamic role African Americans have played and continue to play in U.S. culture. Students engage in lectures, debates, research projects and discussions.

The Greater Boston Project - This accelerated double-block course for seniors integrates English, social studies, and math and emphasizes critical thinking across academic disciplines (interdisciplinary learning). Students learn about Boston -- its history, culture and current events -- and also acquire 21st century skills in collaboration, oral communication, technology and community action.

The SEAL (Social Empowerment, Active Listeners) is a club for students who see a need to create social change and work toward a more culturally proficient district. Check out this link to these METCO students video on social empowerment:
