Policies and Practices In Support of Equity

The district has established goals and is taking steps to ensure that our Policies and Practices are supporting all our students.

  • Review policies and practices through the lens of equity and inclusion and recommend revisions where necessary; collaborate with the School Committee to ensure transparency and accountability.
  • Develop a system-wide process for implementation, enforcement, and reporting of disciplinary matters.
  • Review the District Curriculum Accommodation Plan (DCAP) through the lens of equity and make any necessary revisions.

Action Steps:
  • Update student placement procedures in student handbooks to ensure consistency.
  • Review student attendance, discipline, special education referrals, and related areas of concern to ensure inclusive and supportive policies and practices.

  • By the end of the 2018-2019 school year, all student handbook language around the placement of students into classes, clusters, or levels will be reviewed; consistent language will be adopted by each school and placed in handbooks for implementation at each school.
  • Draft set of guidelines will provide:
    • Context and statement on why the District values classroom environments that are diverse and offer a safe and inclusive space for all learners, including students of color;
    • Guidance for the placement of elementary children within schools;
    • Guidance for the placement of students in clusters at the middle school level;
    • Guidance for the placement of children into specialized programs including METCO, Castles, ELL, special education, etc.
  • Draft will be shared with principals for their input and report will be made at the REAL Coalition's spring meeting for final review before inclusion into school handbooks and practices.
  • Consistent implementation of the placement practices will be implemented in the 2019-2020 school year.

The School Committee revised our policies pertaining to civil rights in March 2018, including policies on Non-Discrimination and Harassment, Equal Educational Opportunities, and Bullying Prevention. Please see current policies.
