Goals
- All students regardless of race, economic status, English language proficiency will have equitable access to diverse high quality educators and school leaders
- Leverage teacher evaluation system to clarify expectations and evaluate teacher competence with culturally proficient and culturally responsive teaching practices
Action Steps and Implementation
- Prioritize diversification of staff:
- Participated in 5 diversity job fairs
- Created new recruitment materials
- Joined the Massachusetts Partnership for Diversity in Education organization
- Attended METCO career fair with a high school student to recruit staff of color
- Formed Diversity Committee and met in December 2018; Committee consists of administrators and teachers
- Set up a Recruitment Google Calendar to support the DLT (District Leadership Team) in attending a variety of events
- Review and update Hiring practices:
- Shadow hiring practices at the school level
- Consistent use of questions in interview process to understand candidates and experience, skills, facility and work with diverse populations
- Develop Retention practices:
- Created working group to assist in the formation of MALANA (Multi-racial, African American, Latinx, Asian and Native American) group
- Established a MALANA's professional learning opportunity with the support of Dr. Maureen Walker
- Train evaluators on what to look for:
- During 3 District Leadership Team meetings, reviewed those aspects of evaluation that are directly tied to our equity work; in small groups, DLT shared dilemmas and worked in teams to develop new perspective on the work
